Out of many of the venues in Charlotte, Snug Harbor has always felt like a second home on Central Avenue, a place where it’s easy to chase away the woes of the day, see the faces of friends in the music community, and get rocked out for a good few hours by a constantly refreshing slate of traveling artists and local superstars alike.

On one of the milder temped nights this September, going solo on this particular night sans Red Jesse, Lil Skritt took to the stage with almost an equal divide of his music catalogue. As a performer, Skritt should be regarded as a jack-of-trades. Many locals and long-time fans alike flock to see him turn his small section of space into a dance floor as he hits a few long-time favorites, from “What’s The Deal Doe?” to “Hot Sauce In My Fanny Pack”.

Intermixed within the classics set list, Skritt dons his guitar and harkens to deeper themes & tones, much of which comes from his Once Before, Now Again (2021) and Lil Skritt, Big City (2024) albums, switching from Pop-Rap to Alt-Country/Americana on the fly. Having come into Skritt’s music career as a late listener, Big City will always be a favorite song set to listen to back-to-front, but that’s never to say all of his material isn’t worth the musical gold it was forged in.

Headlining the night, out of New York, NY, Abby Jeanne & The Shadowband hit the venue hard with trio of harmonies, starting with their latest single, “Baby Come Love Me”. On this night in particular, the band’s drummer caught a bad fever, taking them out of the usual quartet. Where there might have been more bang in their performance, instead was a set-long serenade featuring slowed down almost acoustic versions of each song. While this wasn’t necessarily a planned act, the subtraction of one section gave Snug Harbor a very soulful account of what Abby & the Shadowband are capable of, even on the fly. ~
